WOT hesitation?

4060 Views 16 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Flyinglow
From a standstill taking off aggressively on wot in 1st gear my bike has that 1 second of hesitation and then picks up and goes. I have under 1000 miles on it, oil changed at 500, oem exhausts and air filter no mods. What gives? None of my previous bikes did this..

Wow seems like I'm the only one with this issue since nobody else has replied
Can you be more specific,,,at what rpm are we taking about?
From a standstill WOT would probably 12 o'clock your bike. I've never noticed a throttle hesitation when riding the ninja. I'm guessing the second of hesitation you're feeling is probably just a bike in stock trim with sub-optimal ignition timing. I hear ivan's mod helps with that. Not sure what performance mod's you've done on your bike so really hard to say.

Larry, when I say wot what I really mean is when I start rolling then really get on the throttle it kind of almost stalls for a second or two (on the power) then picks up and takes off. There's that lag that I've never experienced before on any of my bikes. No performance mods on it, its a bone stock bike. Does Ivans work on the 2014's?
I have a stock 2013 model from new, but have not noticed the complaint you have mentioned.
Flyinglow - can you be more specific about what you mean by stalling? Is the engine actually feel like its choking and can't go? Or do you mean it feels slow but then has a huge roar of power? From what I've been reading Ivan only did a '11-'13 mod.
Larry, it feels like a carbureted bike choking if you know what I mean like from a roll on wot and if it had carbs you'd feel like it got flooded a bit then takes off like nothing but initially when you want to get on the throttle it hesitates for like a second or two then gets back and picks up power. I've had a lot of bikes and non had any similar issues even my 89 fz6 with carbs. It really annoys the **** out of me.
Sounds like an internal problem flyinglow. I've ridden enough shitty carb bikes to know the difference between smooth fuel injection and the issue you're describing. Does it do it if you're just revving the motor?
It almost sounds like the traction control kicking in. I have a Mercedes E550 (twin turbo) that would fry the tires if I turn off the traction control. With it on, the car also feels like it "hesitates" for a split second when in reality it's the traction control trying to keep the tires in one piece. Just an idea...I mean I figured I'd throw it out there.
Guys, It just donned on me..fuel cut. Is this what he"s feeling?

Heres a link. i wont cut and paste as this guy did an amazing job of explaining it, not me. Its for a car, but applies 100%.

Dont worry so much about the warnings...

Larry, it doesn't do that when revving but it does under load when riding in gear.

WC. . You have an interesting point that I need to check. I have TC set at level 2 (medium) and didn't think it might interfere unless it's on the highest setting. I will report back on this. Thanks!

Rcannon, thanks for the link, but I'm thinking it doesn't apply cause I have 0 performance mods..?
I wish it were caused by mods, but its in the bike, right from the factory....

Hers how you'd feel it. Say you in any gear, and above 4500 rpm. I'm not sure 4500 is exactly right. I think the 2011-2013 it was more 4300-4600 rpm, but in the area....

You are over whatever rpm int he 4000's. If you shut the throttle off, then turn back on, theres a delay due to this fuel cut. It does not happen at low rpm.

Heres more specific bike info now that you understand the idea...

It was horrible on the 2011-2013 bikes. I understand not so bad in the 2014's.
Ahh west coast, you nailed it my man. It is the darn traction control that's kicking in and interfering with fueling. Thanks for all the replies and support guys. Fells good to finally be a part of Kawi fam.

I'm glad I was able to help. I haven't gotten on mine hard enough to feel the hesitation that you're talking about. Mostly because mine only has 263 miles on it and I'm trying to respect the break in period. The other reason is I'm still intimidated by my beast. :D

I hear you loud and clear about the torturous 500 miles you got to baby the thing.. I was growing inpatient myself for that first oil change even had the bike set to low power just in case I get tempted to open her up lol. Once I got passed the 1st oil change (I went with full syntgetic) and 500 miles things got better cause bike went to Full power mode and the traction has been working hard lol. I actually set it to level 1 least intrusive and tried to pull a small wheelie but still the TC would interfere and cut the bikes power to keep the front wheel down. Wouldn't let it come up not even a foot lol.

Last night though the bike paid for itself speaking of TC. Was doing a late hour midnight canyonish twistie run and while trying to pass a slow old pickup through oncoming lane my tires got on a patch of sandy gravel while I was hard on the throttle to pass, wiggled the tail section and TC lighted up like a strobe light on the dash while settling the bike down. I'm happy that I waited for Cali to get an abs version of these bikes before buying one and the TC was the cherry on top! :)
