I read online the reason why most manufacturers don't want to use FF is they're expensive. The followers need to be very hard and precisely machined.

Ocl, this chart is interesting, and it shows why Kawasaki switched to the finger followers on the zx10. One guy, on the zx10 forum ordered this new head and is installing it on his 2018 bike. The engine never really changed , just the head. This head gave them a few extra revs to play with.

As cool as that is, the reason they needed to do this was because of previous penalties. In a roundabout way, those penalties made them add ti con rods and finger followers to the zx10rr. When they did that, the price increased by 7,000 dollars.

They needed to go this route, as you said, to allow it to make good power at very high revs, and maintain good power at lower revs. FF valve actuation should be applied across to board which will help to lower cost.
