Hey everyone,
I’m thinking of getting a gen 1 z1000sx (2011 model).

Is it possible to mount the rear pannier mounts of a gen 2 z1000sx? Or are there any mod kits for this?

I really like the flush system of the later z1000sx’s and how you don’t need a ugly box rack.

Also,
Any tips on what to look out for on a gen 1? Common issues etc..

You can, but you need a rear subframe from the 2014 or newer bike. You also need both passenger peg supports.

Both grab handles as well. If you install all of this, you could attach the bags.

At one time this list was cost prohibitive, but if you buy used pieces, from eBay, it's not so expensive.

I believe you really do need the subframe as the spot where the rear portion of the grab bar attaches is quite a bit different. At one time, there was an online guide, but the pictures are not there anymore.

It may be possible to make or adapt the stock subframe to rear grab bar mount. That would be nice, but I've never tried.

I always wanted to do this, but my other bike has bags so it wasn't a priority.

I was pretty happy with the Givi V35 luggage on my '11. They hold more than the KQR bags and are shaped better for utility. As for those "ugly" rack boxes, 5 quarter turn Dzus connectors and they're off. It takes all of a minute to remove them and you'd be hard pressed to notice the receiver pieces left behind on the bike. I put the racks on only when I was on the road with luggage.
