Installing accessory power outlet (custom install)

Here's a video on installing an accessory power outlet on the 2017/2018 Ninja 1000. I prefer USB charging over the standard 12v socket, and didn't want to pay $85 for a $5 part, so I made a simple custom setup. I installed a dual USB charger w/ voltmeter display in the factory location. In order to be able to keep those ports covered most of the time, I also installed a single hidden USB port behind the fairing for a dedicated phone charger. The additional USB slots in the factory location can be used to charge my Cardo bluetooth unit, camera batteries, etc... This was a cheap and simple install, and hopefully this video makes it easy to replicate for anyone interested. It also shows where the two sets of powered connectors are (for the power socket, and the heated grips), and it shows a nice clear view of the IMU!

A flooded basement has been taking up my time outside of work, so I'm delayed a few days in my video making. I'm putting together a video on how to remove the fairings and should have that up within the next week. Hope this stuff is helpful to you guys!

Exactly or nearly similar to what I have done to my/our (44 now in India) bikes here in India. Great video btw.

Here's a very detailed fairing removal guide (and Puig Frame Sliders install) for our bike in case anyone is interested -

Cheers...

@ Jonlong
Nice work, very well done and nice that Kawi left the spare lines,,. I used my single spare line for a double USB and mounted next to the key switch however I do like that voltmeter option with the two USB's, really good value,.
PS
Any way of telling if those frame slider will fit the 2016 and earlier?

Sorry to hear about the flooded basement. These videos have been a huge help to me. I installed the Ram mount per your instructions. I'm tackling the USB port tonight.

Did I read somewhere you are doing Shogun sliders also? For me, the offset did not fit correctly. The slider was hitting the fairing no matter how I adjusted the offset. I wouldn't be shocked if I was wrong (I'm not the most handy guy), but the offsets just seem a bit too short. I emailed moto911 about it since they told me they would fit. I wonder if I got old stock.

BTW: I also put the Denali Mini horn in. I'll keep an eye on the connections, but at least the steering is unaffected. The thing blasts some noise!

Completed the USB install using Jon's video. Worked like a charm. Re-installed the fairings and had about 5 bolts left over. Time to take the fairings off again. :) Still hoping to get frame sliders on. I received no response from Moto911 on my issue with the Shogun sliders. (The offsets seem too short.) After that, I'm thinking radiator and crankcase protection and I should be done...at least for a little while.

Not sure exactly what you were asking, but I wouldn’t say that the wiring has changed… just the plugs Kawi used.

The two accessory tie-ins are still there in the 2021. One just under the left fairing (intended for OEM heated grips), and the other further in, below the dash (Intended for the OEM 12v DC Power plug).

I opted to use the 12v DC Power location for a momentary switch wired directly to a garage door opener… but I DID use the accessory tie-ins, one for the BatteryTender USB adapter (which I’ve got tucked behind the left fairing), and the other for my Zumo XT.

Instead of bullet connectors, Kawi used plugs, which you can clip off or use the matching plugs here:

This is the part on cycleterminal.com

You can order the White (Natural) or the Black plug. I ordered the black set (male and female)… but you really only need the male half for your accessory, as the bike side is the female plug
