just thought i'd paste from my excel sheet. stock gearing 2014 ninja 1000:

good stuff .. can you do the calculation with a 16 tooth front ? I wonder if this will prove our theory that it opens up the intermediate gears.

My 2014 Ninja 1000 ABS with 2400 miles already Today for first time early in the morning in a complete empty straigh line i pushed up to the limit. For my surprise the engine cut (The ECU) at 160 Mph exactly. I dont know this bike has a speed limiter. I am very surprise how quick the bike went to 160Mph. I am super happy with the bike and the performance. I am posting this here to show the top with the stock gearing.

sounds good; I'm sure there is some speedo error on the bike.
my spreadsheet can edit rpm as well.

Zues, I think you are being victimized by the speedo error. I really dont understand why manufacturers can't get this right but it is pervasive.

Awesome list!

If you analyze the 10K speed in each gear it does make them more use-able by adding a few mph delta in each gear. This almost makes me consider doing 1 more step on the rear sprocket.

I set it up for the 2014 ninja 1000; maybe the 2015 has same internal ratios.
i thought i read where 2014 got a taller 6th gear.

of course, at some point of extremely tall gearing, a bike can't pull 6th gear redline if it's torque isn't enough to overcome wind, etc.

Buddy i can tell you. The bike has sufficient power to go to redline in no time without problem. The ECU stop the bike at 160Mph. I can tell...

Thats hauling some bikeass....taken my 2014 NJ to 155 on a nice afternoon a month ago...don't think there was much left...but the next time I"m going to find a windless day on my secret road and see if I can push a couple of more mph......now that I have sone fresh rubber.:cool:

This is all really good information. Thank you to those who contributed to the discussion, especially ZEUS' top speed run. I have learned a lot here about which I've had questions.

But I must be missing something. If, as Kawasaki claims, the 6th gear ratio was raised for more relaxed cruising it is not showing up in the numbers presented by alang. I don't question his numbers; I question Kawasaki's claim. alang's chart agrees with my own empirical observations. 6th gear doesn't feel like a bigger step than the other gears AND when comparing my 2015 bike's 6th gear MPH/RPM numbers to a 2013 N1K that a friend rides (with stock teeth sprockets), the numbers are very similar. Is Kawasaki's higher 6th gear claim actually real for the 2014 and 2015 bikes?

The previous gen sixth gear ratio was 25/22=1.136, and the 2014-15 sixth gear ratio is 31/28=1.107. Everything else is unchanged.

The bike does have a limiter which cuts in at 154, it works off the ABS sensor through the ECU. There is no limiter on the Z model which shares the identical motor. This does not make much sense but Kawasaki said they did not limit the Z because its naked.
The Z pretty much limits itself, since it's so dang hard to hang on at 150!

This is interesting. My bike does not have the limit at 154Mph. At least the odometer say 160 Mph when does the limit. Its possible that real miles is 154 Mph. I will try to make another one with a Go-Pro on it and my iphone with GPS on and the app to catch the real GPS miles.

Probably odometer error, 160 could be the 154 limiter.
Speed errors on modern sport bikes (not **** like the FJR/Connie etc) are around 10%. I've heard numerous times that the top speed for an N1K is 145. 160 - 10% = 144...which is damned close to 145.

I also think this because when my bike (not an N1K) got its ECU flashed the flasher corrected the speedo based on gearing. I am now GPS accurate and compared with old number my bikes speed was 9-10% optimistic. It's now perfect. Do a top speed run with a GPS on a RAM mount if you want a true speed run.

Oh, and hi. My friend rides an 2014 N1K, but I've loved an N1K since I demo'd one in 2011.
Top Speed

I have about 5600 miles on my 2014 Ninja........I have been running it up to the near top since about 3000. Yesterday I hit 156 on the speedo I think a little was left.......
